FAQs

How do I know if play therapy is suited for my child?

The initial step in beginning any therapy is a discussion session with a therapist. At this time the therapist will support you to decide if Play Therapy is appropriate for your child and family. You can self-refer to Play Therapy or be referred by another practitioner.

Do I come into the playroom with my child?

Parents do not come into the playroom for individual sessions. If the child needs the support of their parent to transition into the session, we will work together to implement strategies to ensure they feel comfortable before the parent leaves.

Should I talk to my child about their session?

You can ask your child how their session was, but try to stay away from labels. For example, try to avoid asking your child “was that fun?” as the emotions or attitudes they felt may not align with this. Labelling a session or emotion is something we avoid doing. Unfortunately, it may result in the child feeling as though you don’t understand, and create a barrier for them to share with you in the future.

My child is eligible for NDIS, can we claim Play Therapy?

Yes, both self and plan managed NDIS participants are eligible to fund Play Therapy.

How will I know how my child is progressing in therapy?

Your child’s therapist will arrange parent consultations throughout the therapy process. Ideally parents will catch up with their child’s therapist once every 5 sessions (4-6 weeks). You will spend time discussing progress, play themes, and support strategies. These catch ups should take place without the child present. It is an important part of the process that we avoid speaking about the child and their sessions in front of the child, as this can make them feel unimportant and unseen.

How many Play Therapy sessions will my child need?

Every child progresses through therapy at their own pace. Often children begin to display change within the play room before other environments. Your child’s therapist will keep you updated on any changes or breakthroughs which you may then notice yourself.

Can my child engage in play therapy at home or school?
